Using of Cordless Electrostatic Sprayer for Killing Virus - Part 1 – Science 21

Many companies have developed new technologies to spray disinfectant easily, one of them called as “Cordless Electrostatic Sprayer.”

Image 1- One of high-tech disinfecting machines (credit to EvaClean).

This is a machine with an electric charge which is able to spray to most kind of surfaces, then “coat and wrap” them evenly.

We may fill the Electrostatic Sprayer tank with specific substances (chemical liquid) such as:

- mold preventives
- disinfectants
- sanitizers
- and other safe chemical liquid available in the commercial markets

Image 2- Bags, just for illustration

There are many brands in the market. The number of companies (brands) is increasing day by day, since this kind of spray is popular during Covid 19 pandemic.

Image 3- Purple flowers of Myrtle, illustration

Few reasons to use this Electrostatic Sprayer:

- effective compared to regular spray
- affordable price

Some companies (brand names) produce Cordless disinfecting machines, just for examples are:

- Protexus
- Victory Innovations
- Emist
- Brulin
- and Otarius

A Red Tail Hawk in Our Neighborhood – Science – 20

We have noticed that a lot of hawks visits our neighborhood areas in the last several years.

Image 1- A young red tail hawk.

We believe that at least two species of hawks comes and goes to search foods in our yards.

The two species might be:

- red tail hawk with scientific name: Buteo jamaicensis.
- cooper hawk (Accipiter cooperii).

In addition to physical appearances, the different between red tail hawk and cooper hawk is based on referring to their food preferences.

Image 2- Trees, the place we may see hawks

Image 3- A red tail hawk catches a squirrel.

The significant different between red tail hawk and cooper hawk in term of food consumption are:

- red tail hawk consume squirrels and other small animals
- cooper hawk consume birds (smaller birds) only

So, the two photos (Image 1 and 3) of this posting are photos of “red tail hawk,” not cooper hawk, since they eat squirrel.

My neighbors said that they could be “young stage” of red tail hawk. That why they are not “really” like adult red tail hawk.

What do you think?

Dungeness Crabs from Gulf of Mexico – Science 19

We visit seafood markets to have a look what might be interest us or to buy cooked foods, ready to consume seafood, just for sometimes.

Image 1- Dungeness Crabs in the market

We found Dungeness Crabs (Metacarcinus sp) in Asian Grocery, section of seafood recently. It was surprising for us.

Why?

As we knew Dungeness Crabs are living a lot in Alaska, then the question is: how they reach thousands km from Alaska to seafood market in our city, Baton Rouge, LA?

Another surprising that crabs still live in the market. They were crawling swimming in the tank.

Image 2- White flowers, illustration only

Image 3- Several Dungeness Crabs in the sea water tank.

No, the crabs are not transport from thousands of kilometers distance or from Northern state, Alaska to Southern state, our city, Baton Rouge, but they were caught from nearby area.

Our state has area called as Gulf of Mexico. Yes, Dungeness Crabs come from this ocean. Since not far away, the carbs are fresh.

Distribution of Dungeness Crabs is quite widespread. We may find in several states include: California, Oregon, and Mississippi. The crabs are also identified in Mexico.

Have you seen Dungeness Crabs

What is the Reason Specific Plants to Trap Animals? – Science 18

I have posted about event of swap plants in our city garden. You may read the previous post:

- Swap Plants at Our City Botanical Garden

Image 1- One of Carnivorous plants

One of plants is interesting for me, called as “carnivorous plant" with scientific name Sarracenia sp.

One of well-known species in Louisiana is Sarracenia alata. There are at least 8 species in the USA, some of them are:

- yellow plants with scientific name Sarracenia flava.
- sweet trumpets, Sarracenia rubra.
- purple pitcher plants, Sarracenia purpurea.
- pale trumpets, S. alata.

Image 2- Crowd in the city garden

What make me wonder is that What is the “main reason” Specific Plants to Trap Animals?

Image 3- Picture of carnivorous plants

After searching through internet that the reason is to consume them. Generally, we know that animals eat plant, we call it “herbivorous.”

Then, why?

It is because soil “can’t support” their live. In evolutionary process, the plants then consume animals for nutrients they require for surviving.

Some nutrients taken from animals are:

- sulfur
- phosphorus and nitrogen

Finally, have you seen carnivorous plants nature?

The Four Weeks Old Baby Squirrel – Science 17

The squirrel is one of wild critters has been living in our neighborhoods. Others include crocodiles, raccoon and birds.

Image 1- A baby girl squirrel

Some of our neighborhood critters have been published in this blogger:

We just found 2 babies' squirrel about 4 weeks ago on the our yard. I believe they fall down from a tree, a tall tree off course.

Image 2- A little puppy and getting strong

When we found, one has already dead. Another one didn't have any injuries at all, and quite amazing that a baby squirrel is still alive with us now.

Image 3- She eager to play

Vets told us that hard to take care newborn babies squirrel even for an experienced rehabber, the baby highly possibly still die.

Image 4- She is milking

Just to let you know that squirrels are mating and birthing twice a year in our areas (state):

- around December to February
- June to August

Period of gestation is up to 46 days, but no less than 38 days. After three months, squirrel babies should be able to eat foods from nature such as:

- vegetables
- nuts or seeds
- and fruit

Newborn Sea Turtles are almost All Females – Science 16

I believe that we all know about global warming, and I just post about higher temperature in many cities across America:

- Higher Temperature due to Heat Island Effect – Science 15

Image 1- A box turtle at our yard.

Increasing of temperatures has caused responds either positively or negatively by natures (animals).

Just for one example that in fact, eggs of sea turtles have hatching almost all female of new babies in many places in recent years.

Normally, ratio between female and male turtle babies was about 60% to 40% or 65% to 35%.

Image 2- Toy turtle, illustration

99% of females for newborn turtle has been found in the beaches include in the areas of:

- in Australian beaches
- in Florida, USA beach

Image 3- Turtle box came to backyard

As you might know that turtle gender is determined by temperature after fertilization. Few other animals are (examples only):

- alligators and crocodiles.
- some species of lizards

Then, temperature during eggs incubation in the beaches (sand) will decide turtle baby's sex:

- lower than 27.7 Celsius (81.9 F) degree will result in almost males
- higher than 31 Celsius (88.8 F) degree will hatch almost female

Now, you may guess why newborn turtles are tending to almost all females.

Higher Temperature due to Heat Island Effect – Science 15

If you live in the city or urban areas in Europe or America, I believe that you experience heat wave, at least you face “higher temperatures” during this summer season.

Image 1- Higher temperature in the city
(credit to World Meteorological Organization).

It is called as “Heat Island Effect” where higher temperature occur in the bigger cities.

Infrastructures in the cities absorb heat during daylight then they release its throughout the night. Temperatures have increased both at day and at night.

The city infrastructures may include:

- buildings (offices, malls, supermarkets and urban residential)
- roads
- bridges

Image 2- Road and building in the city

Image 3- Crowded in the city

Heat island effect could cause temperature increase by about:

- in daytime is 2 to 5 F (1.1 to 2.8 C) degree
- in nighttime is 1 to 7 F (0.6 to 3.9 C) degree

There are 159 cities are affected by Heat island effect across USA, few of them are:

- San Francisco, California
- New Orleans, California
- Newark, New Jersey and New York City, New York

How about with your city? Do you feel heat in this summer?

Knock Out to Understand Human Diseases – Part 2 – Science 14

You may read the previous posting (Part 1):

- The Rainbow Before Evening : Knock Out to Understand Human Diseases – Part 1 – Science 14

Image 1- chrysanthemums

The knockout will result in disrupt of targeted gene. Since mouse is closely related to humans, thus, it is favorite animal for knockout experiments, especially with regard to genetic questions that relate to human physiology.

At the firt Image (Please see Part 1: Knock Out to Understand Human Diseases – Part 1 – Science 14), we can see how to target gene.

The introduce specific gene modification in mice by the use of embryonic stem (ES) cell, then produced knockout animal (mice).

Image 2- Alaska Pollock, just for illustration

Image 3- Banana, illustration only

As described by Hansson (2007: ADVANCED INFORMATION. Gene modification in mice.) that knockout have become absolutely important in medical research.

Then, through targeting (removing) a specific gene, we can find out what happens once it is gone.

It is lead to new understanding of normal development and disease processes, then identified new avenues for medical therapy which benefits to human being in the near future.

Just to let you know that Hansson, GK was the Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine 2007
