We did not see a raccoon since last couple years at backyard. We see one in this Spring, quite surprising.
It might be related to the foods; we have two kinds now. They are safflower seeds and a new birdseed.
When we have safflower seeds, the raccoon did not like it. We guess the squirrels didn't either.
We put out a new birdseed that contains a lot of goodies. We bought a huge bag from Costco. Now the racoon and the squirrels have returned.
Some people said the raccoons attracted by pet foods. However, if you want to feed them though, feed them dog kibble. They are actually canine, and the cat food is too high and taurine for them and eventually can cause severe liver damage.
Did raccoons visit your yards?

The raccoon dog has also now established itself permanently in the Netherlands, particularly in the northern provinces and Flevoland. But not in southern Holland. That raccoons sometimes seek out gardens could also be that they are seeking a safe nesting or burrowing place that provides them shelter and security. And also that they can find more food there . Raccoons are very often attracted to animal food that is outside, an open compost heap or an easily accessible garbage can.

How exciting to see the raccoon back after so long! It’s fascinating how different food choices can influence which critters show up. Sounds like your new birdseed is a hit with both the raccoons and squirrels! 🦝
ReplyDeleteyes, food is important to attract wild critters...

We see raccoons on our deck occasionally, I do not want them hanging around for safety reasons. My dog might try to attack one. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a wonderful weekend.

We have raccoons come into our courtyard from time to time. They are always on the hunt for free food! I walked out to look at the sky last night and was glad NOT to see one! Hugs!

Sounds like word got out fast in the critter community — “new buffet at your place!”
ReplyDeleteThat fancy birdseed must be *really* good if the raccoons and squirrels came running back!
And thank you for the helpful tip about raccoons and pet food — I didn’t know cat food could be harmful like that. Dog kibble it is, if anyone's feeling generous!
Nature is wild... and apparently hungry!
Haha, looks like your backyard's new restaurant is open for business!
