Are Bald Eagles not Endangered Species Anymore? - Nature 50

We found Bald Eagles just sometimes in our areas. Sure, they are not common species compared to other birds.

The bird with scientific name Haliaeetus leucocephalus is beautiful, for me It’s truly rare to see one in its natural environment.

One of neighbors just saw a nesting pair in our close by areas. They have been nesting there for years, but not sure if they are back this year.

Unfortunately, the Bald Eagles are not included as endangered species list anymore.

The main reason that since 2007, Bald Eagles populations are sufficient enough in nature.

Luckily, as reported by US Fish & Wildlife Service (2023: Bald Eagle) the bird is protected under two acts.

The two acts are “the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.”

Impacts of Winter Storms – Nature 49

We talked about “Winter Storms during Cold Season” at previous post:

Impact not only to an individual, but also to communities, and even to animals (pets or farming).

High speed and chilly winds may cause personal injuries, and sometimes deaths.

It is often that the storm has strong effect on many activities:

- travels
- business
- and school activities.

Hundreds of flights may be canceled.

House maintenance is expensive during cold season. Snow and ice could cause on water pressure, sump pump and water temperature, then lead to plumbing problems.

Please avoiding hypothermia where our body may become freeze due to lack of blood circulation, thus body has extra worked when exposure to extreme cold by pushing more blood to keep lungs and heartwarming and working properly.

Finally, take care yourself during extreme temperature of cold storm.

Winter Storms during Cold Season – Nature 48

We got first winter storm in early January this year. The storm brought freezing rains and snow to many states of USA.

The snowfall was approximately 5.1 cm (2 inches) per hour in several states such as:

- Nebraska
- South Dakota
- Minnesota

It was predicted in the coming days that winter storms will again visit several parts of USA.

As you might be know that severe storms due to a blast of cold air from Arctic region sometimes, and as one of important factors.

Temperature is expected to drop to F below zero or around 17 C minus, so much below the freezing point with might be more than a one feet snow.

Since winter storms cause temperature dropping and bring snow, and snow could cover many spots, thus very hazardous to walk or drive in this condition.

Mockingbirds are Permanent Residents of Our State – Nature 47

Since my photos are not sharp enough, just using a cellphone, I doubt to say what species of the bird I saw.

Through Google ID searching by image, the result said that the bird is the Northern Mockingbird.

Then, I believe with at least two reasons:

- the length size is quite similar to Robin
- length of tail is almost the same with its body
- body shape is slender

Moreover, why are Mockingbirds permanent residents of Louisiana state?

We may observe the Northern Mockingbirds through all seasons all seasons in our state, Louisiana.

Hence, they are permanent residents of our state, not migratory birds come in from other states or regions.

In fact, mockingbirds are common birds. They seem well adapt to the city and residential areas. I often see this bird seeks insects nearby our neighborhood.

Green Parakeet in Our State – Nature 46

The Green parakeet or the Monk parrot was not the USA native bird. The birds came from South American areas.

They are imported to the USA around 1950’s, then distributed across America. We may spot Monk parrots in the garden or parks in almost states.

The record has shown that a green parakeet was seen the first time in our state, Louisiana around 1960’s.

They are breeding in the wild successfully. The wild area was around the city of New Orleans, then spread to nearby cities.

We just saw the green parakeet at the corner of one of our neighbor houses. However, we don’t know whether the bird is a wild or a pet one.

At the first, the parakeet looks sleepy, then when we approach, the bird flew away. Hope, she found a good shelter.

A Pheasant in Neighborhood – Nature 45

Quite surprising that we met with a pheasant when we were walking in our neighborhood area recently.

Morning walking or jogging for 35 minutes is our routines, almost daily. Sure, we encounter a lot of critters.

It was the first time to see a pheasant. Since this critter is normally a wild animal, and it should be live in areas such as:

- farmlands with multiple crops
- woodland edges
- brushy meadows
- and open areas

We assumed some people must be raising this critter close by. People raise pheasants for several purposes: just for pets, a source of food, and return their back to nature.

In case of introducing to the wild, the pheasants then for hunting purposes. It is quite popular in several parts of America.

Cooper Hawks Love to Come to Bird Feeders – Nature 44

A Cooper hawk is one of hawks found in our state, Louisiana. They live in the edges of woods or forests.

We may see Cooper hawks fly around our neighborhood recently. This hawk is common, not include as a rare critter.

From several sources, the raptors active to hunt their prey during dawn and sunset as their favorite hunting times.

However, these hunting times don’t apply at our neighborhood. We usually see Cooper hawks chasing their prey around 9 AM in the morning until afternoon. It seems daylight hunter.

Interestingly, we always see Cooper hawk visit our bird feeders. We then wonder: why?

After a while we find the answers:

1) Cooper hawk knows that small birds come to feeders.

- so, these small birds are good and easy preys to catch
- prey of Cooper hawks may include doves, woodpeckers and quails

2) My guess that bird feeders as their source of food as well.

Wild Bees are Visiting My Backyard – Part 2 - Nature 43

Naturally, the word “honeycomb” has multiple purposes:

- housing for brood, included capped larvae, larvae and eggs
- storing pollen, nectar and honey.

Moreover, I familiar with the word's honeybees, bumble bees and wild bees, but honestly, I do not know differences of these critters. I just saw many bees come to my backyard.

They were abundance in the spring, then the number reduced in the summer. But bees still appear in the early fall.

They seem visit our backyard to pollinate my flowers and fruit plants, some of them are:

- orange quash,
- tangerine orange
- figs.
- blackberry and strawberry

The bees also collect pollen and nectar from plant flowers and wild flowers.

It is said that honeybees are outnumber the other bees, hence they are most important of pollinators in nature.

Wild Bees are Visiting Our Backyard – Part 1 - Nature 43

Indeed, Spring and Summer times are the peak of bees visiting our backyard, but we may see few bees in early Autumn.

As reported by Gees Bees Honey Company (2022: What Do Honeybees Do in the Fall?) that they noticed “Even after the first frost, the bees bringing pollen into the hive, presumably from aster flowers.”

The number of bee species is quite great, it is estimated about thousand different species both in the world and in North America:

- 16,000 species in the world.
- 4,000 species in North America.

Of thousands, I wonder why one species only to produce honey called honeybee with scientific name Apis mellifera.

Another species, bumble bees produced honey as well, but just small amount for their own used only. Hence, the honey can’t be collected by beekeepers for commercial purposes.

Moreover, Honeybees live in collective for years, while wild bees live collective for short period, one season.

Honeybees live in the hives which have honeycomb.
